The summer house

After helping the Velikov family move their belongings to Popovo, we have now got the keys to our new second house. The house is intended as a base for family, friends and volunteers to stay in, if they want.

It’s a small property; one main bedroom, kitchen, living room, a second bedroom in an adjoining building, and an outside toilet. It’s got mains cold water, electricity and a large garden (800m² – small by Bulgarian standards!). It has two wood-fired heaters (pechkas) and a fridge, and a basic washing-machine (not front-loading, more like an old twin-tub).

We hope to keep it as traditional as possible; we will put a small gas cooker in the kitchen, rearrange some of the furniture to give a better layout for guests, and eventually install a solar shower, if people really want that sort of thing!

Otherwise the house is warm, cosy and dry, and will suit anyone wanting to have a simple house to stay in.

The garden has a nice little flower garden, strawberry beds and grape vines, the rest is ready for us to plant. We intend using it mainly for growing food for livestock; corn for the chickens and root vegetables for the pigs. It also comes well stocked with a number of fruit trees.

Looks lovely! Gary and I would love to come for a visit, all our time off is sorted for this year however. Will definitely try to organise a visit in 16, and if the bungalow is occupied I am sure there would be a nearby hotel/B n B you could recommend. Xx

We are pleased you enjoyed your stay in the guest house, the kitchen knocked into the living room idea is working well so we are nice and warm but probably not as warm as you guys now you are back at home 🙂
